Dental health is often the most neglected aspect of feline veterinary care. Why? Well, if you've ever tried to get a cat to open its mouth, you probably know why! Aside from a brief glimpse during a yawn, these secretive critters aren’t likely to let you get a good look—even with the best intentions.
That said, we’re not powerless to help our kitties when it comes to oral health. An oral exam (included with every BRVC feline wellness visit) and regular dental cleanings with X-rays can prevent many of the most painful and expensive problems.
Common Dental Concerns in Cats
Gingivitis/Periodontal Disease – Caused by bacteria that create plaque buildup on the teeth, which solidifies over time and damages the gums and bone. When this occurs, teeth often become loose or fall out. Most cats will develop this disease without regular checkups and cleanings.
Feline Oral Resorptive Lesions (FORLs) – Affect more than half of adult cats at some point. This occurs when gum tissue begins to erode a portion of the tooth. The cause is unknown, but FORLs can be quite painful, much like cavities in humans.
Stomatitis – A condition where the cat develops an allergic response to the normal plaque and bacteria on the teeth, causing redness, pain, and gum inflammation. Often, removing the affected teeth eliminates it entirely.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma – A serious and often deadly form of cancer that usually begins as a small lump on the gums or under the tongue. The sooner it’s caught, the more treatment options are available.
