Veterinary Student Externship Opportunites

Now Scheduling Externships for October 2026 and Beyond.

Experience what it's like to practice veterinary medicine in a collaborative, privately owned, AAHA-accredited hospital committed to exceptional patient care and mentorship.

Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center & Urgent Care offers year-round externship opportunities for third- and fourth-year veterinary students, with placements ranging from one to four weeks. To provide each student with the most meaningful hands-on experience possible, we host only one extern at a time.

During your externship, you'll work alongside experienced veterinarians while gaining exposure to General Practice, Urgent Care, Internal Medicine, Holistic Medicine, Exotic Medicine, Reproductive Medicine, advanced diagnostics, and surgery. In addition to clinical experience, you'll gain valuable insight into client communication, hospital operations, and the day-to-day responsibilities of practicing veterinarians.

What You'll Experience
  • Assist with general surgery, specialty surgery, and advanced procedures, including laparoscopy
  • Gain experience with diagnostic imaging, including ultrasound
  • Participate in patient workups, problem lists, treatment planning, and case management
  • Shadow multiple veterinarians during appointments
  • Assist veterinarians and the medical team with patient monitoring and ongoing care
  • Learn about client communication, practice management, and hospital operations
  • Explore the legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities of veterinary medicine


Our Goal

Our externship program is designed to help bridge the gap between veterinary school and clinical practice by providing meaningful mentorship, real-world experience, and opportunities to build confidence in a supportive learning environment.

Students will also gain an appreciation for the important role every member of the veterinary team plays in delivering exceptional patient care. Whenever appropriate, hands-on learning is encouraged and supported.

Housing may be available for visiting students depending on the time of year.
