As the crisp autumn air settles in, it’s the perfect time to adjust your pet’s care routine. Cooler temperatures, shorter days, and seasonal hazards can all impact your pet’s health and comfort. Here are some practical tips to help your furry friends stay happy and healthy this fall:
1. Adjust Exercise Routines
Cooler weather makes walks and outdoor play more comfortable, but be mindful of shorter daylight hours. Consider reflective collars, leashes, or harnesses to keep pets visible during evening walks. Indoor enrichment activities, like puzzle feeders or scent games, can also help maintain activity levels when outdoor time is limited.
2. Grooming Adjustments
Autumn often brings changes in shedding and coat thickness. Regular brushing helps manage loose fur and prevents matting. For long-haired breeds, pay special attention to undercoat grooming to avoid tangles that can trap dirt and moisture.
3. Joint and Mobility Support
Cold weather can affect older pets’ joints. Discuss joint supplements or diet adjustments with your veterinarian to support mobility, particularly for senior pets or those with arthritis.
4. Weight Management
With potential decreases in activity, monitor your pet’s weight and adjust food portions as needed. Seasonal treat moderation can help maintain a healthy weight.
5. Be Aware of Seasonal Hazards
Autumn brings some hidden dangers. Antifreeze, fallen mushrooms, and certain seasonal plants can be toxic to pets. Keep an eye on your yard, walk routes, and any decorations that could pose a risk.
