Holiday Decor & Treats: Pet Safety Tips for Thanksgiving & Beyond
By: Lauren Szyszka, Phone Department Supervisor
The holidays are a time for family, food, and festive decorations—but they can also bring hidden dangers for pets. Chocolate, turkey bones, and seasonal plants can pose serious health risks, while candles or string lights can cause injury if left unattended. Keeping pets safe during Thanksgiving and other fall celebrations requires awareness, preparation, and proactive care.
1. Foods to Avoid
Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and foods containing xylitol are toxic to pets—even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or more serious complications.
Turkey bones and fatty table scraps can lead to choking, intestinal blockages, or pancreatitis.
Safe alternatives include plain cooked turkey, carrots, green beans, or commercial pet treats.
2. Decor & Household Hazards
Candles and open flames should always be placed out of reach—curious noses or paws can knock them over.
String lights, cords, and small decorations can be chewed or swallowed, potentially causing obstruction or injury.
Seasonal plants like lilies, chrysanthemums, and poinsettias are toxic to cats and dogs. Consider artificial or pet-safe decorations instead.
3. Managing Guests & Holiday Tables
Remind family and friends not to feed pets table scraps, as even small amounts of rich foods can upset their stomachs.
Provide a “pet-friendly” space with their bed, water, and toys to reduce stress and temptation during gatherings.
4. Emergency Tips
Know your local veterinary emergency contacts and keep them accessible.
Signs of ingestion or injury include vomiting, lethargy, difficulty breathing, or unusual behavior. If you suspect your pet has consumed something dangerous, contact BRVC or an emergency clinic immediately.
