Many families want their pets along for holiday trips—but traveling can be stressful if not planned carefully. Whether your journey is across the Tri-Valley or further away, taking a few simple steps will keep your cats and dogs safe, comfortable, and happy.
Getting Ready to Travel
Identification: Make sure microchips and ID tags are up-to-date.
Comfort: Bring familiar blankets, toys, and treats to help pets feel secure in new surroundings.
Health: Schedule a pre-travel check-up to confirm vaccines are current and discuss any medications or health needs.
Travel Tips for Different Modes
Car Travel: Use a secure crate or seatbelt harness. Take frequent breaks for bathroom, water, and short walks. Never leave pets alone in a parked car.
Air Travel: Check airline requirements for crate size, labeling, and documentation. Sedation should only be used if recommended by your veterinarian. Make sure pets can breathe easily, stand, and turn around in their carrier.
Keeping Pets Safe Away from Home
Choose accommodations that are genuinely pet-friendly and safe.
Watch for signs of unease, like pacing, excessive vocalizing, or not eating.
Stick to familiar routines as much as possible, including feeding and walks.
With careful planning, traveling with pets can be a fun and safe part of the holiday season. Planning a trip this year? Reach out to our team at Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center for pre-travel tips, safety advice, or a quick check-up to make sure your pets are ready for the journey!
