Summer may be winding down, but the heat is far from over—especially here in California. High temperatures can be dangerous for pets, even into early fall. Whether your pet spends time outdoors or stays inside with you, it’s important to keep them hydrated, cool, and protected as the heat continues.
Here are some simple ways to help your pet stay safe during the hottest part of the year:
Always make sure your pet has access to clean, fresh water—indoors and out. Cats, in particular, tend to drink less, so offering multiple water stations, pet fountains, or even ice cubes in their bowls can help increase interest. Wet food can also contribute to their hydration.
Limit walks and outdoor playtime to early morning or late evening. Sidewalks and asphalt can burn paw pads, even when the air feels cooler. A good rule of thumb: if the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet.
If your pet spends any time outside, be sure they have access to full shade and good airflow. Indoors, use fans, air conditioning, or cooling mats to keep the environment comfortable. For cats, closing blinds during peak sun hours can help lower the temperature in their favorite window spots.
Heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or difficulty breathing can signal heat exhaustion or heatstroke—especially in flat-faced breeds, senior pets, or those with underlying health conditions. If you notice any of these signs, contact us right away.
Frozen treats or pet-safe popsicles can be a fun way to help pets cool down. You can also freeze toys or treats in water or low-sodium broth to create a refreshing, interactive activity.
During times of extreme heat, BRVC provides cooling stations for pets in need of a safe place to rest and rehydrate. We’ll share updates about this service on our social media channels, so be sure to follow along if your pet—or a neighbor’s pet—needs relief from the heat.
