Is Your Pet Ready for Summer Adventures? Travel & Boarding Prep Checklist

As we head into the busy spring and summer season here in the Tri-Valley, many families are planning vacations, weekend getaways, and outdoor adventures. Whether your pet will be traveling with you or staying in a trusted boarding environment, a little preparation ahead of time can make all the difference in keeping them safe, healthy, and comfortable.

At Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center & Urgent Care, we’re here to help you feel confident and prepared so your pet’s care stays consistent—no matter where the season takes you.

Use this simple checklist as you plan ahead for summer travel and boarding.

Keep Your Pet’s Vaccines Up to Date

One of the most important steps in preparing for travel or boarding is making sure your pet’s vaccinations are current. Many boarding facilities, pet sitters, and travel accommodations require up-to-date vaccines for safety and admission.

Commonly required or recommended vaccines include:

  • Rabies (for both cats and dogs)
  • DHPP (distemper combination vaccine for dogs)
  • Bordetella (kennel cough for dogs)
  • FVRCP (for cats)

If you’re not sure what your pet is due for, a quick wellness visit can help ensure everything is current and avoid last-minute surprises before your trip.

Stay Current on Flea, Tick & Heartworm Prevention

Travel and seasonal activity can increase your pet’s exposure to parasites, especially in outdoor spaces like parks, trails, and unfamiliar environments.

Before heading out, we recommend making sure your pet is protected with:

  • Flea and tick prevention
  • Heartworm prevention for dogs
  • A veterinarian-recommended parasite prevention plan based on your pet’s lifestyle and travel needs

For some dogs, longer-lasting prevention options may also be a helpful fit. One example is Bravecto Quantum, which can help simplify protection during busy seasons when routines get a little hectic. Our team is always happy to talk through whether an option like this makes sense for your pet’s individual needs.

Even short trips can expose pets to parasites they wouldn’t typically encounter at home in the Tri-Valley, so a quick check-in before you travel can go a long way in keeping them safe and comfortable.

Double-Check Identification & Microchip Information

Before you leave, take a moment to confirm that your pet’s identification is current. This simple step plays an important role in keeping pets safe when they’re in new or unfamiliar environments.

We recommend checking:

  • ID tags are secure, readable, and up to date
  • Microchip information is registered and current
  • Phone numbers and emergency contacts are correct

If your pet is not yet microchipped—or if you’re unsure whether the registration is active—our team can help get that updated for you.

Pack a Pet Travel Essentials Kit

Bringing familiar items from home can help your pet feel more comfortable during travel or boarding. A little preparation here can also help maintain consistency in their routine.

Helpful items to include:

  • Your pet’s regular food (to avoid diet changes)
  • Treats
  • Medications with clear dosing instructions
  • Leash, harness, or carrier
  • Bedding or a comfort item from home
  • Waste bags or litter supplies
  • Any required medical records

Keeping your pet’s routine as familiar as possible helps reduce stress in new environments and supports a smoother transition.

Help Your Pet Adjust to Time Away from Home

Every pet responds differently to travel or boarding. Some adapt quickly, while others may feel more anxious with changes in routine.

If your pet tends to be sensitive to separation or new environments, a little preparation ahead of time can help:

  • Consider a short daycare or trial boarding visit
  • Talk with your veterinary team about calming or supportive options if needed
  • Keep drop-offs calm, consistent, and reassuring

Our goal is always to make your pet’s experience as comfortable and low-stress as possible, while also giving you peace of mind while you’re away.

Plan Ahead for Spring & Summer Availability

Spring and summer are some of the busiest times of year for both travel and boarding services in our area. Planning ahead helps ensure you can secure what you need without added stress.

We recommend booking early for:

  • Boarding reservations
  • Wellness exams and vaccine updates
  • Travel or boarding clearance appointments

A little advance planning can make a big difference when schedules start to fill quickly.
