The holiday season is a wonderful time to celebrate with family—and that includes your furry friends! At Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center, we want to help you keep your cats and dogs safe, happy, and healthy throughout all the festivities.

 

Watch Out for Holiday Hazards

Holiday decorations, treats, and activities can create hidden risks for pets. Some common things to watch for include:
 

• Toxic foods: Chocolate, grapes, raisins, xylitol (found in sugar-free gum and candy), alcohol, and fatty foods can make pets seriously ill.
• Decorations: Tinsel, ornaments, candles, and small objects can cause choking or digestive problems if swallowed.
• Wrapping materials: Ribbons, string, and tape may seem harmless but can be dangerous if ingested.

Helping Pets Feel Comfortable

The holiday bustle—guests, noise, and changes in routine—can make pets feel uneasy. To help them stay calm:
 

• Provide a quiet spot where they can retreat and relax.
• Keep feeding, walking, and playtime routines as normal as possible.
• Offer puzzle toys, interactive games, or safe treats to keep them occupied.

Including Pets in Holiday Fun

Pets can be part of the celebrations safely:
 

• Give pet-friendly treats and toys.
• Supervise interactions with guests, especially children.
• Include them in activities that suit their personality, like short walks, gentle play, or cozy cuddle time.
