At Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center, we offer advanced surgical options designed to provide your dog with safer, less invasive care. Our laparoscopic techniques are modeled after the gold standard in human medicine, offering pets a gentler experience with faster recovery.
A laparoscopic spay (also called a laparoscopic ovariectomy) is a minimally invasive surgery where only the ovaries are removed through small incisions. This approach results in less pain, smaller incisions, and quicker healing compared to traditional open spays, while delivering the same long-term health benefits.
Yes. For breeds at higher risk of gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV)—a serious stomach twisting condition—we can perform a laparoscopic gastropexy at the same time as the spay. This procedure anchors the stomach to prevent GDV and is recommended especially for large, deep-chested dogs like Great Danes and Weimaraners.
Neutering (castration) is generally not performed laparoscopically but through a small open incision. However, if your male dog is at risk for GDV, a gastropexy can still be performed at the same time as the neuter surgery to provide that additional protection.
Laparoscopic procedures are usually offered for dogs over 6 months old and weighing at least 20 pounds. We recommend a consultation with one of our veterinarians for any dog new to our practice or who has not been examined within the past six months to ensure the best personalized care.
