When your pet isn’t feeling well, it can be tempting to “wait and see.” But sometimes, even a few hours can make a huge difference. Rex’s story shows how acting quickly—and getting the right care—can help save a pet from serious problems.
Rex is a five-year-old Pitbull and a beloved member of one of our staff families. He’s sweet, playful, and a little adventurous—especially when it comes to snacks he really shouldn’t be eating.
One day, Rex suddenly became very tired and started vomiting. Knowing his history of getting into things he shouldn’t, his family didn’t wait—they brought him in right away. That quick decision made all the difference.
When Rex arrived, our team moved quickly to figure out what was going on.
Rex received:
A thorough physical exam
Safe sedation so we could take clear abdominal radiographs (X-rays)
Careful evaluation for signs of an intestinal blockage
The X-rays showed material in his intestines. At first, it wasn’t clear whether it would pass on its own or require surgery.
Because blockages can become dangerous quickly, Rex stayed with us for:
IV fluids to keep him hydrated and stable
Comfort care while he rested and recovered
Repeat X-rays to safely monitor movement
Our team watched him closely so we could act right away if surgery became necessary.

A few hours later, repeat X-rays showed the material had moved into his colon, meaning surgery wasn't needed. Rex passed the object safely then he had a bowel movement and went home feeling much better.
Common items dogs and cats swallow include:
Socks
Toys
Bones
Corn cobs
Food wrappers or trash
These objects can cause dangerous blockages.
Warning Signs of a Blockage:
Vomiting
Low energy or lethargy
Loss of appetite
Abdominal discomfort
Straining to defecate
If you notice these symptoms, don’t wait—contact your veterinarian right away.
Rex’s story is a reminder that early action can prevent bigger problems. If something doesn't seem right with your pet, trust your instincts and call your veterinarian.
