Spring Gardening with Cats: Keeping Your Kitty & Plants Safe

Spring has sprung, and it’s the perfect time to add some green and floral color to your home and garden. But if you have cats around, it’s important to choose plants that won’t be toxic if your kitty decides to nibble—and even non-toxic plants need protection from curious paws and teeth!

Toxic Plants: What to Watch For

Indoor cats are especially vulnerable to plant toxins. Bringing toxic plants into your home—or letting outdoor cats roam where dangerous plants grow—can put your feline at risk.

Common toxic plants include: Amaryllis, Azalea, Chrysanthemum, Coleus, Cyclamen, Dieffenbachia, English Ivy, Jade Plant, Kalanchoe, Lilies*, Narcissus (daffodils), Oleander, Oxalis (Shamrocks), Pothos, Sago Palm, and Snake Plant.

*Lilies are the most dangerous: even a single petal or pollen lick can cause irreversible kidney damage within 24 hours. All varieties are toxic, but Lilium species (Easter, Stargazer, Tiger, Oriental, Day lilies) are especially harmful.

For a more comprehensive list and guidance, visit the ASPCA’s Poison Control website.

Protecting Your Plants from Cats

Cats can damage plants even when they’re non-toxic. Chewing foliage, uprooting seedlings, or digging in soil can leave a mess—and a stinky one at that. Using large pebbles over soil or a Scat Mat can help deter digging while keeping your plants safe.

A Cat-Friendly Garden Alternative

If your cat is determined to munch, create their own safe “garden.” Pre-grown cat grass is available in stores, or you can grow it at home with a container, potting mix, and wheatgrass seeds. A sunny spot and light daily watering will yield tasty sprouts in days. Cat grass can aid digestion, help with hairballs, and provide safe enrichment—just feed in moderation.

With a little planning, you and your cats can enjoy spring greenery safely. Happy gardening!
