Spaying your dog is one of the most important decisions you can make for her long-term health. Today, advances in veterinary medicine offer safer and more comfortable options than ever before. At Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center & Urgent Care, we offer laparoscopic spay surgery - a minimally invasive alternative to traditional spaying.
A laparoscopic spay is a minimally invasive procedure that removes the ovaries through one or two very small incisions. Unlike a traditional spay, which removes both the ovaries and uterus through a larger abdominal incision, this technique focuses only on removing the ovaries.
Removing the ovaries provides the same health and population-control benefits as a traditional spay, but with significantly less tissue disruption.
Instead of making a large abdominal incision, the surgeon creates a small “keyhole” opening. A tiny camera is inserted through this incision, projecting a magnified, high-definition view of the internal structures onto a screen.
This enhanced visualization allows the surgeon to clearly identify the ovarian ligaments and blood vessels. Specialized surgical instruments are then used to carefully seal the blood vessels before cutting them, reducing the risk of bleeding.
One of the major advantages of this technique is that the ovarian ligament is precisely cauterized and divided rather than stretched or torn - which is often the most uncomfortable aspect of a traditional spay. Because the uterus is not removed, there is less internal tension and trauma to surrounding tissues. The result is a highly controlled, precise procedure with reduced surgical stress on your dog’s body.
Your dog will receive a thorough physical exam and any recommended pre-anesthetic testing to ensure she is healthy and ready for anesthesia. Our team will review fasting instructions and answer any last-minute questions.
The procedure itself is typically shorter than a traditional spay due to the efficiency and precision of the technique. Your dog is closely monitored throughout anesthesia for safety and comfort.
Most dogs go home the same day. Because the incisions are small and tissue trauma is minimal, many pets are more comfortable and alert sooner than expected.
We’ll provide detailed aftercare instructions, but in general you can expect:
Many owners are pleasantly surprised at how quickly their dog seems to bounce back.
A laparoscopic spay offers the same lifelong health benefits as a traditional spay but with less pain, smaller incisions, faster recovery, and improved surgical precision. For many dogs, it represents a safer and more comfortable surgical experience.
