Why Is My Pet So Itchy? Common Causes of Itching in Dogs and Cats

If your dog or cat has suddenly started scratching, licking, chewing, or rubbing more than usual, you may be wondering, “Why is my pet so itchy?”

Itching is a common concern in dogs and cats, but there isn't always one simple answer. Allergies, fleas, ticks, skin infections, food allergies or sensitivities, and other health concerns can all cause or contribute to itchy skin.

The good news? Paying attention to changes early can help identify the cause and get your pet feeling comfortable again.

What Causes Itching in Dogs and Cats?

There are many possible causes of itchy skin. Some of the most common include:

Environmental allergies
Grass, pollen, weeds, dust, and other environmental allergens can cause seasonal or ongoing skin irritation. Some pets may also develop irritated paws or ears.

Fleas and other parasites
Fleas are a common cause of itching in pets. Even a small number of flea bites can cause significant irritation, especially in pets with flea allergy dermatitis. Ticks can also pose health risks, making consistent parasite prevention an important part of your pet's overall wellness.

Skin infections
Bacterial and yeast infections can cause itching, redness, odor, scabbing, hair loss, or other changes to the skin. Some pets may also develop recurring ear infections.

Food allergies or sensitivities
Some pets can develop reactions to ingredients in their diet that contribute to ongoing itching or skin irritation.

Other health concerns
Certain hormonal conditions and other medical problems can also cause changes to the skin and coat.

Because many different conditions can look similar, identifying the underlying cause is an important part of helping your pet feel better.

How Can I Tell If My Pet's Itching Is a Problem?

Occasional scratching is normal, but frequent or excessive itching is worth paying attention to.

Watch for signs such as:

  • Frequent scratching or rubbing
  • Excessive licking or chewing, especially of the paws
  • Red or irritated skin
  • Hair loss or thinning
  • Scabs, bumps, or sores
  • Changes in skin color or texture
  • Unusual skin or ear odor
  • Restlessness or difficulty settling because of discomfort

If your pet is spending a noticeable amount of time scratching, licking, or chewing, or you are seeing changes to their skin, it's a good idea to check in with your veterinary team.

Can Fleas and Ticks Cause My Pet to Itch?

Yes. Fleas are one of the most common causes of itching in dogs and cats, and some pets can have a significant reaction to just a few flea bites.

Ticks may not always cause noticeable itching, but they can transmit diseases and are another reason year-round parasite prevention is important.

For dogs, BRAVECTO QUANTUM provides 12 months of flea and tick protection through a veterinary-administered injection. Keeping flea and tick prevention current can help protect your pet from parasites that may contribute to skin irritation while also reducing other parasite-related health risks.

What About Heartworm Prevention?

Heartworm disease is different from the flea and tick problems that commonly cause itching, but it is still an important part of year-round parasite prevention.

Heartworm disease is spread through mosquito bites and can cause serious, potentially life-threatening disease in dogs.

ProHeart 12 is a veterinary-administered injection that provides 12 months of heartworm disease prevention for dogs 12 months of age and older. It also treats certain hookworm infections.

While heartworm prevention won't treat an itchy pet, keeping your dog's heartworm and flea and tick prevention up to date helps protect against several important parasite-related health concerns.

When Should I Take My Itchy Pet to the Vet?

If your pet is persistently itchy, it's important not to assume that seasonal allergies are always the cause. A veterinary examination can help determine whether the problem may be related to parasites, allergies, infection, or another underlying condition.

Contact your veterinarian if you notice:

  • Persistent or worsening itching
  • Open sores, scabs, or bleeding
  • Significant hair loss
  • Repeated ear infections or ear discomfort
  • Changes in appetite, energy, or behavior
  • Restlessness or difficulty settling

Your veterinarian may recommend additional testing or treatment depending on what they find during the examination.

Helping Your Pet Feel More Comfortable

Itching can be frustrating for both pets and their families, but constant scratching, licking, or chewing shouldn't simply be considered “normal.”

Paying attention to changes in your pet's skin and behavior, keeping parasite prevention current, and seeking veterinary guidance when concerns persist can all help keep your dog or cat comfortable and healthy.
