Age: 6 years
B.B. is a 6 year old indoor/outdoor cat. One day when he had come back from his daytime patrolling, his owner noticed his eye looked very odd - in fact, it looked terrible. He decided to bring him in to Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center to have it evaluated.
On physical exam, his eye appeared to have gone through a degree of trauma - the highest concern was for puncture (from a stick or other object versus a cat scratch). Unfortunately he had lost his vision and was blind in the eye. The eye was also severely infected and abscessed. Conditions such as these are extremely painful and pose a high risk to the patient's health, as an abscess (or pocket of infection) can eventually send bacteria into the bloodstream, causing them to fall ill very rapidly.
When we have a situation such as this, enucleation (removal of the eye) is the best way to move forward. B.B.'s owner did want to move forward with treatment, however had marked financial concerns. This is where Just Like New came in to help. Just Like New is a program run through the Paws In Need organization that exists to help cover one-time costs for pet owners who cannot afford necessary emergency veterinary care. Its goal is to prevent unnecessary suffering and/or euthanasia of pets because the owner lacks financial resources.
Dr. Erin Scott performed the enucleation surgery, which went very smoothly. The eye was removed, and B.B. recovered without any problems - he was eating and happy the following day and able to go home with his owner.
Three cheers to Dr. Erin Scott and Just Like New for giving B.B. a new lease on life, and providing a happy ending for this lucky kitty!
